In my family, our dishes have stories. There's the Poppies on Blue set that my parents received as a gift when they were first married, the set of snowy-scene mugs that we bring out for Christmas, the actual china that was used at my parent's wedding, the glasses that my whole family knows to line up just a certain way in the windows, the set of dishes we bought at our church's rummage sale. Each time we bring out our dishes, it's as if we are eating off a memory.
For this piece, I translated a selection of my old journal entries into teapots, bringing my own stories to dishes. Teapots are already full of personality; their spouts and handles give them the semblance of a human torso. It was a natural progression, therefore, to use that form to retell my stories and share my personality. Each teapot recalls a memory of my time at college and how my experiences have shaped me into the person I am today. Rather than transferring the text of the entries directly to the teapots, images and designs are used to convey the emotions and memories of the entry.
